Once, two brothers who lived on neighboring farms, separated only by a stream, came into conflict. It was the first big quarrel in a lifetime working side by side, sharing tools and taking care of each other.
For years they walked a narrow, but long, road that ran along the river so that at the end of each day they could cross it and enjoy each other's company. Despite their tiredness, they did it with pleasure, because they loved each other. But now everything had changed. What had begun with a slight misunderstanding finally exploded into a harsh exchange of words, followed by weeks of utter silence.
One morning the older brother heard a knock at his door. As he opened it, he noticed a man with a carpenter's toolbox in his hand, who said to him, "I'm looking for work, maybe you have a little service here and there." May I help you?
- Yes! said the farmer. "Of course I have work for you." See that farm beyond the creek. It's from my neighbor, actually, my younger brother. We fought a lot and I can't stand it anymore. See that pile of wood near the barn? I want you to build me a tall fence along the river so I don't have to see it anymore.
"I think I understand the situation," said the carpenter.
"Show me where the hammer and nails are, and I will surely do a job that will satisfy you."
As he had to go to town, the older brother helped the carpenter find the material and left. The man worked hard all day measuring, cutting and preaching.
It was already dusk when he finished his work, while the farmer returned. But his eyes could not believe their eyes. There was no fence! In its place was a bridge that connected one side of the stream to the other. It was a fine job indeed, but in a rage he exclaimed:
- You are very insolent in building this bridge after all I told you !!!
However, the surprises were not over. As he looked up at the bridge once more, he saw his brother approaching the other bank, running with his arms outstretched. Each of the brothers stood motionless on their side of the river as they rushed toward each other, hugging and weeping in the middle of the bridge.
Thrilled, they saw the carpenter packing his tools and leaving.
- Do not wait! said the oldest. Stay with us a few more days, I have many other projects for you.
The carpenter then answered him:
- I'd love to stay. But, I have many other bridges to build.
